Born in Great Thurlow, Suffolk in Q2-1892 [Risbridge 4a:711] to William (or James) and Susan MOORE (née COOTE).
1901 census...Tom [8] was visiting the Jarvis family in Great Thurlow. His family may well be the James & Susan Moore at Westfield, Woodditton. 1911 census...Thomas [18],a labourer, was living with his stepfather William DYER and mother Susan (re married 1905) at Hamilton Stud Cottages, Exning Road, Newmarket. He was working for Lord Derby at Stanley House, Bury Road, Newmarket prior to enlistment. His mother was at 21 Links Cottages, Dullingham Road, Newmarket when completing forms for CWGC |

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. The 7th Suffolk landed at Boulgone on 30th May 1915 and after a few weeks in France, marched to the Ploegsteert area in the Ypres salient for several weeks from July to September 1915, changing places with the 9th Essex every 6 days. Thomas appears to be the only 7th Battalion death that week. The Newmarket Journal of 18th September 1915 reported:- KILLED IN ACTION :- Capt. Chitty Thomas, of the 7th Suffolk Regt., has written to Mrs Dyer, 6 Gwynne Terrace, Exning Road,Newmarket, informing her that her son, Pte. T.Moore, was killed in action on the night of September 5th. "The one consolation I can offer you", Capt. Thomas says, "is that he was killed instantaneously, and therefore suffered no pain. At the moment another man was mortally wounded and your son's great pal,Pte. Tweed, brought assistance which enable their bodies to be brought back to our trenches. Tweed is still suffering from the shock. Your son's platoon officer speaks highly of him, and I can only add that he is a loss to his regiment and the British Army. In your great grief I trust you will be comforted by the thought that he died nobly in the service of his Country and his Sovereign." Pte.Moore, previously to enlisting in August 18914, was in the employ of Lord Derby. |
